X-Men ’97 Could Nab Back-to-Back Renewals for Seasons 4 and 5

X-Men ’97 may be far from finished: Marvel Studios is quietly lining up more seasons, with buzz that seasons 4 and 5 are already on the table—even without an official green light.
Quick heads-up on Marvel's animated front: even without an official renewal, it sounds like X-Men '97 is gearing up to run longer than anyone expected.
"There is definitely, more than possibly, more to come from X-Men '97. We're talking about Seasons 4 and 5 now."
- Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios Head of TV, Animation, and Streaming, to Collider at New York Comic Con
What Marvel is (and isn't) saying
No press release, no poster, no fireworks. But Winderbaum flat-out said they're already talking about Seasons 4 and 5. That's the clearest hint yet that the revival won't stop at Season 3.
For context: X-Men '97 is a direct continuation of the 1992–1996 X-Men: The Animated Series. Winderbaum also said Season 3 is deep in production — he has seen animatics for almost the entire season and even watched a cut of an episode, which he called incredible. Meanwhile, Marvel has already renewed the show through Season 3 and locked Season 2 for summer 2026. Yes, that's a long wait after Season 1 hit in March 2024.
- Premiered: March 2024 on Disney+, directed by Jake Castorena
- Renewal status: Officially renewed through Season 3
- Season 2: Premieres summer 2026
- Season 3: Animatics for most episodes are in; Winderbaum has seen an episode
- Beyond that: Conversations are happening about Seasons 4 and 5 (not officially announced)
The behind-the-scenes shakeup (and why the show didn't wobble)
Marvel fired original showrunner Beau DeMayo shortly before Season 1 premiered, which is the kind of last-minute change that usually messes with a show's vibe. Writer Matthew Chauncey (Ms. Marvel, What If...?) took over as showrunner. Rogue voice actor Lenore Zann told Collider the team had already finished most of Season 2 before that switch, which goes a long way toward explaining why the tone and story stayed intact.
Movie talk and the bigger X-plans
Zann, Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), and AJ LoCasio (Gambit) have said they'd love to make an animated X-Men movie. That's interest, not confirmation. On the live-action side, Marvel is developing a new X-Men film with Jake Schreier attached to direct. So yes, the X-corner of the MCU is busy on multiple fronts.
The bottom line
X-Men '97 has been one of Marvel's strongest streaming performers, and with Season 3 well underway and Season 2 dated for 2026, the train is clearly still moving. Even without an official rubber stamp, it sure sounds like Seasons 4 and 5 are more a matter of when than if.
