Behind the Scenes TBBT Drama Even Simon Helberg Was Upset With
Everyone was devastated over Jim Parsons' departure.
After 12 years on the air, The Big Bang Theory had to face cancellation after Jim Parsons decided to part ways with the project. The news came as a shock to fans, and the show's wonderful ensemble cast was equally saddened by their fellow actor's decision.
After all, the whole team bonded strongly over the years, becoming best friends to each other, just like their characters.
The news of Parsons' departure was so unexpected that some cast members — like Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco — were quite outraged at first, arguing that the situation should've been handled differently. It's hard to blame the actors for their harsh reaction, as the TBBT team had to wrap up the show abruptly and say goodbyes, not seeing how the story could run any further without one of the leads.
And while the Howard actor, Simon Helberg, was just as heartbroken as the rest of the team, he actually defended Jim Parsons' decision to quit the project.
First of all, it's worth noting that the relationship between Helberg and Parsons was always cordial during the show's run. The Sheldon actor admitted Simon was the person he would miss the most after his departure.
'I'll particularly miss Simon Helberg; we spend a lot of time together, we go back and forth to our dressing rooms, we've talked for almost 12 years now. Six months down the road after we finished, I will be like, "I haven't talked to Simon in a deep way in a long time." And that will be hard,' Parsons shared.
Perhaps their great relationship is the reason Helberg never put the blame for TBBT's cancellation on his co-star.
'Jim didn't cancel our show. Jim just finished the run of our show as we all did, contractually, and no one ever asked us to continue doing the show,' the actor said.
Helberg also noted that he himself was ready to move on at that point, so the series' finale came just at the right time.
'I was ready to… get out of the security of the show to fully find out what was next for me,' he admitted.
However, this doesn't mean Helberg accepted the news optimistically and without complaint. While he doesn't criticize Parsons' decision to leave, he was upset that the news came with no warning and took everyone by surprise.
'In terms of the actual, I guess, what you could call the cancellation of the show, that occurred in [the] meeting where we were informed by Chuck that the show was done. That's what I found to be the most upsetting,' he said.
