Stumped by today’s September 25 NYT Connections? Grab our sharp, spoiler-light hints and category cues to nudge you to the finish without ruining the solve.

Connections got a little spicy today. If September 25 is giving you that sinking feeling four guesses in, I have nudges... and the full breakdown if you want to peek.

Quick refresher

Connections is the New York Times game that dumps 16 words in your lap and asks you to sort them into four tidy groups of four, each tied to a hidden theme. You only get four mistakes to figure it out, which is brutal but fair. The board is color-coded by difficulty when you solve it (yellow is usually easiest, purple is the curveball), and the game will sometimes toss up a mercy hint if you are close.

"one away..."

Pro tip: start by chasing the yellow theme, save purple for the end when your brain has warmed up.

Today’s board (Sep 25)

The 16 words are: CONE, LIBERAL, FICTIONAL BOXER, BLUE, RAINMAKER, PROGRESSIVE, MARTIAN, GREEK/ROMAN GOD, SPLIT, GOOD SHEPHERD, LEFT, SPACECRAFT, DEPARTED, CUP, SHAKE, THEATER.

Gentle nudges

Yellow is political. Green hangs out at the ice cream counter. Blue is a movie thing (and pretty famous titles at that). Purple is the one with shared names across very different worlds. That last category is some real inside baseball.

Full answers (spoilers)

  • Left-leaning, politically: BLUE, LEFT, LIBERAL, PROGRESSIVE
  • Ice cream parlor orders: CONE, CUP, SHAKE, SPLIT
  • Matt Damon movies with "The": DEPARTED, GOOD SHEPHERD, MARTIAN, RAINMAKER
  • All named "Apollo": FICTIONAL BOXER, GREEK/ROMAN GOD, SPACECRAFT, THEATER

And if you still want to keep the daily streak going after this one, the NYT Games page also has Wordle, Pips, Strands, Tiles, and a few other time sinks waiting for you.
