Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Star Wants In on Soulframe, Warframe Studio's New Fantasy MMO
Jennifer English returns to the booth for another RPG, ready to lead the party and steal the show.
Jennifer English stays booked and busy in fantasy land. If you have touched a big RPG lately, odds are you have heard her: Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3, Latenna in Elden Ring, and Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Now she is headed to another one.
Jennifer English is Alora in Digital Extremes' new fantasy MMO
Digital Extremes, the studio that has kept the sci-fi MMO Warframe humming for over a decade, is pivoting to high fantasy with its next online world, Soulframe. During the latest developer stream, the team announced that English will voice Alora, Empress of Eldveil. She introduced herself to players (called Envoys) with a very in-universe flourish:
"Greetings, Envoys. I had the strangest dream, you see, of a fairy who spoke in threes. She told me thus, 'Beyond the veil from whence I hail where all is Fey and flora, I'm growing weak and cannot speak, so I've a question for ya. Lend me your voice - you haven't a choice - soon, they'll call us Alora.' And, naturally, I said yes, and we simply cannot wait to meet you."
We do not have a full read on the Empress yet, but the new concept art does a lot of talking: she is draped in a winged cape and rocking what looks suspiciously like a headcrab hat. Whether she is benevolent, ruthless, or both is still a mystery. The fashion is undeniable.
Playtest Update 12 lands in two weeks
The stream was not just casting news. Digital Extremes also outlined what is next for the ongoing Soulframe playtest. Update 12 arrives in about two weeks and focuses on smoothing the early-game edges while adding a few toys:
- Improved tutorialization to help new Envoys get their bearings
- A new greatsword weapon for the heavy-hitters
- A fast travel system, so getting around is less of a trek
As for an actual launch, the studio still is not planting a flag. No release window yet.
About that title
Given the name, some folks have assumed Soulframe is a Soulslike. The creative director has heard that before and addressed it head-on:
"We agonized over it"
Translation: the name nods to its Warframe lineage more than it signals punishing dodge-roll combat. We will see how it plays, but for now, the headline is simple: another big fantasy world just signed Jennifer English, and that usually means your ears are in good hands.
