Baby Driver 2 Hits the Gas With New Update — But Don’t Expect It Anytime Soon
Edgar Wright has finally lifted the hood on Baby Driver 2, revealing fresh movement on the sequel in development since 2019 to his 92% Fresh hit — but the next getaway is still a ways off.
Edgar Wright finally said something concrete about Baby Driver 2, and it boils down to this: yes, the script exists; no, it is not rolling cameras anytime soon. If you have been waiting since the sequel first started percolating back in 2019, you are going to be waiting a while longer.
So, is Baby Driver 2 happening?
Wright told The Playlist he has already written the sequel. The holdup is the usual cocktail of timing, money, and schedules that do not line up when you want them to. In other words, this is not a simple yes or no. It is a not yet.
"There is a script for Baby Driver 2. That is something that actually exists. But most filmmaking depends on factors beyond you - timing, financing, who is available. You are not always completely in control of those things."
On top of that, he is planning to hit pause before choosing his next gig. He even joked that after The Running Man lands in theaters, he might just sleep for the rest of the year. Translation: do not expect Baby Driver 2 to leap to the front of the line the second he wakes up.
Quick refresher on the first movie
Baby Driver, released in 2017, was written and directed by Wright and turned into a legit hit with critics, snagging a Certified Fresh 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from 394 reviews. It won Wright the Audience Award for Best Director at its 2017 SXSW premiere. The cast was stacked: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez, and Jamie Foxx. Elgort even picked up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor - Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).
If you somehow missed it, the story follows a young getaway driver who times his life to a personal soundtrack. He falls for a girl, dreams of going straight, but gets pulled back by a crime boss and a heist that threatens to blow up his life, his love, and his freedom.
Where things stand now
- Script: Written by Wright. It exists.
 - Status: Not in production. Dependent on timing, financing, and cast availability.
 - Timeline: This sequel has been in development since 2019, and it is still a ways off.
 - Wright's schedule: He plans a break after The Running Man hits theaters, joking he might sleep the rest of the year.
 - Bottom line: Encouraging update, but do not hold your breath for a start date.
