Avengers: Doomsday May Upend Comic Canon for Chris Evans’ Captain America
Chris Evans is reportedly suiting up again for Avengers: Doomsday, but fans expecting a straight-from-the-comics arc may be in for a shock. A leaked trailer and fresh rumors hint that Steve Rogers returns in a twisty role that upends canon.
So apparently we are all just cool with the idea that Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday. The new twist floating around: a leaked teaser supposedly shows Old Man Steve living in the past with Peggy Carter... and holding a baby. Cute, sure. Also potentially a big swing away from the comics.
What the leak shows, if it is what it says it is
The low-res teaser that keeps popping up shows Steve riding up on a motorcycle, walking into his house, staring at his old suit, and then cradling a baby. It plays a sparse piano take on the Avengers theme, then cuts to a title card.
"Steve Rogers will return in Avengers Doomsday"
It looks like a quiet slice of his post-Endgame life after he returned the six Infinity Stones and stayed in the past with Peggy. And yeah, the baby looks like his kid, not an adoption. That matters, because...
Comics check: Steve and Peggy do not have a kid in the main continuity
In Earth-616, the primary Marvel comics timeline, there is no major, canonical storyline where Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter have children together. That is not a thing. Across alternate timelines, animated universes, and even video games, Captain America does end up with kids - just almost never with Peggy, and never as a big 616 plotline. So if the movie gives Steve and Peggy a baby, the film is not playing it straight with the comics. Not a sin, just worth noting.
Cap's kids across the multiverse, for context
- Sarah Rogers - Earth-9811, What If...? #114: Daughter of Steve and Rogue. Wields Cap's shield and even Mjolnir. She leads the next generation against Vincent von Doom, the son of Doctor Doom and the Enchantress, giving her a direct tie-in to Doom family drama.
- Ellie Rogers - Secret Wars: Hail Hydra #2: Daughter of Steve and Sharon Carter on a Battleworld reality. A resistance leader fighting that world's corrupted Avengers. She gets infected by the Venom symbiote during a climactic HYDRA battle, fights it off through sheer will, and gains super strength and agility.
- James Rogers - Earth-555326, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow (animated): Son of Steve and Natasha Romanoff. After Ultron kills the Avengers, Tony Stark raises James and trains him as part of an elite strike team. James inherits super soldier traits like enhanced strength, stamina, and speed.
- Nicky Rogers and Steven Rogers Jr. - Earth-8342, What If? #38: Younger and older brothers in a reality where Steve and Sharon have multiple kids. Nicky is named after Nick Fury. Unlike Ellie, these two do not take up the freedom-fighter mantle.
- Sharon Rogers - Marvel Future Fight (video game universe): The one daughter Steve actually has with Peggy, but only in this timeline where Steve was never frozen, married Peggy, and their daughter becomes a new Captain America with an energy-absorbing shield designed by Tony Stark.
- Ian Rogers, aka Nomad - Earth-616 adoption: Created by Arnim Zola in Dimension Z. Steve rescues baby Ian and spends 11 years there raising him. Ian is captured and brainwashed, fights Steve, gets saved again, and is later found and mothered by Sharon Carter. Back on Earth-616, he becomes Nomad, helps the Secret Avengers defeat Zola, and even works under Sam Wilson's Captain America. Ian considers Steve his father and Sharon his mother, period.
So what is Avengers: Doomsday actually doing?
If that teaser is legit, Steve is in the past with Peggy and a baby. That raises some questions the movie will have to answer or skate around. One rumor says a scene with Steve, Peggy (yes, Hayley Atwell), and Doctor Doom is being filmed. The extra-spicy version of that rumor has Robert Downey Jr. playing Doom. If true, that is a wild collision of timelines and fan expectations.
Obvious questions this sets up: Is Doom coming after Steve for messing with the timeline? Does any of this threaten the peaceful Endgame ending Tony Stark finally got? And what about the original Steve who is still frozen in ice while future-Steve lives out a life with Peggy - how is the film going to square that loop without breaking the MCU's own rules? This is the kind of deep continuity tangle Marvel either explains in two lines or spins into a whole arc.
Where things stand right now
All of this is based on a supposed leak that is not exactly IMAX quality, so treat it like a rumor until Marvel shows it to us in 4K. But the broad strokes line up with the chatter that Chris Evans is back, Steve Rogers is on screen, and Doomsday is going to touch the Endgame-era time travel again. Whether that baby is a canon rewrite or a curveball, we will see.
The essentials
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, with a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, and more. Marvel Studios has it on the calendar for December 18, 2026.
Got theories on Steve, Peggy, Doom, or that baby? Throw them at me. I am equal parts curious and mildly terrified of how messy this could get in the best possible way.
