Avengers: Doomsday Could Finally Let Oscar Isaac Play His Favorite X-Men Hero as a Variant

Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac has said his dream Marvel role has always been Wolverine—the clawed mutant he grew up idolizing, he told Esquire.
Oscar Isaac is already busy being Marvel's resident fist of vengeance, but the man clearly has claws on the brain. And honestly, same.
Isaac's dream role? The short, angry one.
'It is a toss up between Wolverine and Archangel. But I have to go with Wolverine. As a smaller guy, you know Wolverine's a little guy, in the comics at least he was. You know, furry and angry, and I could relate to that.'
- Oscar Isaac to Esquire
That love for Logan has been floating around for a while, but here is where things stand right now: in his own recent comments (via ComicBook), Isaac says he is not locked in for Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. So, on paper, no official Wolverine moment for him yet.
But after the multiverse chaos in Deadpool & Wolverine, the door is very much open for variant cameos. A quick one-off 'Isaac-as-Logan' in some reality-jumping detour? Absolutely possible.
Marvel's next era: mutants front and center
Post-Phase 6, the plan gets way more X-shaped. Kevin Feige told The Wall Street Journal he has a 10-year roadmap that puts mutants at the center of the MCU. Translation: once Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars wrap up Phase 6, Phase 7 shifts heavily toward the X-Men bench.
We are already seeing the pieces on the board: X-23, Gambit, and of course Deadpool popped in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Kelsey Grammer's Beast resurfaced in The Marvels. Beast could even be positioned to lead the team on screen sooner rather than later.
And the development chatter is heating up. On Feb. 6, 2025, industry insider Jeff Sneider posted on X that an X-Men movie is aiming to film in 2026 for a 2027 release, with casting and a director reveal likely in the coming months. He also teased that CinemaCon this year could be a big one for announcements. As always: pencil, not pen, until Marvel says it out loud.
What we are hearing about Avengers: Doomsday
Here is the current snapshot being floated: Doomsday is being lined up with the Russo Brothers directing and a December 18, 2026 release date. The roster attached includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, and Anthony Mackie. Again, Isaac says he is not confirmed for Doomsday or Secret Wars, so do not count on Moon Knight or a surprise Wolverine from him there yet.
If not Wolverine, here are three Marvel roles Isaac could crush
- Hyperion - A godlike savior who thinks he is fixing the world while actually breaking it. Isaac has already shown he can juggle complicated inner lives in Moon Knight, so a shiny, morally bent powerhouse is right in his wheelhouse.
- The Beyonder - An omnipotent outsider fascinated by humanity. Give Isaac a cerebral, curious cosmic oddity and he will make it feel human, unsettling, and oddly charming.
- The Maker - The nastiest version of Reed Richards: cold, manipulative, terrifying. If you liked the darker edge of Jake Lockley in Moon Knight, picture that vibe scaled up to universe-breaking stakes.
The takeaway
If Marvel really is kicking off a long mutant era after Phase 6, there are a lot of ways for Isaac to get involved beyond Moon Knight — including, maybe, that scrappy Canadian with the knives for hands. And if not? There are at least three other roles he could absolutely own.
