James Cameron is hinting at a dramatic finale: Avatar 3 — Fire and Ash — could be the last trip to Pandora. Landing in US theaters next month, the sequel reunites Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña as the franchise stares down a possible endgame.

James Cameron is doing the thing only James Cameron can do: hyping his next movie while casually hinting he might end the whole franchise if it doesn’t earn its keep. If you were banking on Avatar 4 and 5 as guarantees, maybe pencil those in instead of ink.

So, is Avatar 3 the end?

On The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, Cameron floated the idea that Avatar 3 — officially called Avatar: Fire and Ash — could be the last stop for Pandora, at least for him, if the box office doesn’t justify more.

'I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money. The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?'

He says he’s 'absolutely' ready to walk away if Fire and Ash doesn’t hit the number. And he’s very aware of how much time he’s put into this world: he wrote the first version back in 1995, it got shelved for a decade after a brief spark of interest, then he jumped back in around 2005 and has basically lived there ever since. His words were basically: if this is where it ends, cool.

If Fire and Ash does end up being the last film, Cameron says there will be one unresolved thread — intentionally left open. Worst case, he jokes he’ll write a book to close it out if he has to.

What about Avatar 4 and 5?

They’ve been announced, but Cameron’s stance is... flexible. Handing the franchise to someone else to direct? His first instinct was 'absolutely not.' Then he softened it: he has options for how deep he gets, and producing is on the table. He also doesn’t see a future where an Avatar movie happens without him closely producing. The bigger issue for him is bandwidth — how much of his life it takes over is the deciding factor.

Who’s in it and when do we see it?

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are back as Jake Sully and Neytiri, with Cameron directing for 20th Century Studios. Despite some chatter that it was 'next month,' the actual U.S. release date is December 19, 2026. Mark that one — that’s the real date.

  • Title: Avatar: Fire and Ash (aka Avatar 3)
  • Director: James Cameron
  • Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana (returning as Jake and Neytiri)
  • Release: December 19, 2026 (United States)
  • Cameron’s line in the sand: if the box office doesn’t justify more, he’s fine ending it here
  • Future possibilities: he might produce sequels, but likely won’t let one happen without his close involvement
  • Loose end: one major thread could remain unresolved if this is the final film — and yes, he says he’ll write a book if it comes to that
