As Season 2 Approaches, Frieren Manga Enters Indefinite Hiatus Over Author’s Health
Mark your calendars: the anime returns in January with Season 2—new year, new episodes, same obsession.
Quick update on one of the best shows running: Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is back on TV very soon, but the manga just hit another speed bump.
The manga is on indefinite break again
Due to health concerns for writer Kanehito Yamada and artist Tsukasa Abe, the Frieren manga has gone on an indefinite hiatus. This already happened once earlier this year, when the series paused in January and returned in July. Now, roughly two months after that comeback, the serialization has stopped again. The pause was first reported by @MangaMoguraRE; the creators have not posted an official statement yet.
Fans are understandably more worried about the people than the schedule. One message that kept popping up in different forms was basically this:
"Take all the time you need and just get better. No need rushing back and re-aggravating whatever the ailment is. We can wait, your health can't"
What it means for the anime
Short version: Season 2 should be fine. The anime team reportedly has enough manga material to power a whole new run of episodes without interruption, and it is set to premiere on January 16, 2026. There is already a first look out there. If the manga keeps pausing, the ripple effects are more likely to hit Season 3 than Season 2.
January 2026 is shaping up to be busy in general, with Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 and Fire Force season 3 also lined up for that month.
Where Season 2 picks up
Season 1 followed the post-heroic life of Frieren, an ancient elf mage dealing with the long shadow of near-immortality after helping defeat the Demon King. By the finale, Frieren and her apprentice Fern had finished their mage exams and were headed into the northern territories.
Season 2 is expected to start around chapter 61 in the manga, adapting the Continued Northern Travels arc. That means more time with Frieren, Fern, and Stark as they push deeper into unfamiliar territory.
The situation at a glance
- Manga paused in January for health reasons, resumed in July
- After about two months back, the manga is now on an indefinite break again (reported by @MangaMoguraRE), with no official creator statement yet
- Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 is slated for January 16, 2026 and is not expected to be affected
- Season 3 could be delayed if the manga keeps stopping and starting
- January 2026 also brings Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 and Fire Force season 3
It is a bummer, but health comes first. The show can wait. And if Season 2 sticks the landing off chapter 61 and beyond, we will have plenty to chew on while the manga team takes the time they need.
