Army of the Dead alum Raúl Castillo joins The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 as a series regular, injecting fresh blood into the Manhattan apocalypse.

Looks like Raul Castillo is sticking with the undead. After blasting through Zack Snyder's 'Army of the Dead' as sharpshooter Mikey Guzman, he's headed back into zombie territory. Deadline says he's joining 'The Walking Dead: Dead City' season 3 as a series regular named Luis. That's all they're sharing on the character for now — just the name.

Where the show is at

'Dead City' launched in June 2023 and quietly became the year's biggest cable drama debut. On its AMC airing alone it drew 683,000 viewers; add simulcasts on BBC America and IFC plus replays, and the tally climbed to 1.12 million. That strong start made a season 2 inevitable, and the follow-up did well enough to get us to season 3, which is now filming in Boston. Yes, Boston doubling for post-apocalyptic Manhattan — a very TV production move.

Who is steering the ship

Eli Jorne, a former writer and co-executive producer on 'The Walking Dead,' ran the first two seasons of 'Dead City.' For season 3, 'Walking Dead' veteran Seth Hoffman is taking over as showrunner. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan — who've played Maggie and Negan since seasons 2 and 6 of the mothership, respectively — are back and also executive produce alongside Hoffman, Scott Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, Brian Bockrath, and Colin Walsh.

Quick story refresher

The series follows Maggie and Negan trekking into a sealed-off, post-apocalyptic Manhattan — a crumbling island overrun by walkers and the people who've turned New York into their own chaotic ecosystem. In season 2, as factions fight to control the city, Maggie and Negan end up on opposite sides. Their paths keep crossing, but the way out turns out to be messier and more dangerous than either expected.

Who else is new in season 3

Along with Castillo, Jimmi Simpson ('Dark Matter') and Aimee Garcia ('Dexter') are joining as series regulars. Simpson plays Dillard, and Garcia plays Renata.

Smart pickup with Castillo — he brings a calm, coiled energy that tends to pop in genre shows. Now we wait to find out who Luis actually is and which side of Manhattan's mess he lands on.
