Anya Taylor-Joy Was Reluctant to Appear on the Dune: Part Two Red Carpet for a Hilarious Reason
The actress didn't know how she would be received by the other stars.
Summary
- Dune: Part Two is currently the highest grossing movie of 2024.
- Anya Taylor-Joy has a small cameo in the movie.
- The actress didn't know if she would be welcome on the red carpet.
- She may return in the third Dune movie.
The second installment of Denis Villeneuve's Dune remake premiered almost three months ago and became one of the biggest releases of the year, grossing over $711 million against a budget of $190 million. In fact, no other movie has come close to this level of success. And it's no wonder why.
Dune: Part Two has a compelling story at its core, mesmerizing CGI and an all-star cast led by Timothée Chalamet. In addition to the actors from the first film, including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Stellan Skarsgård, the second installment features new stars such as Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Léa Seydoux.
Anya Taylor-Joy also makes a brief cameo in Dune: Part Two, which was a big secret until the movie's release. On the one hand, it created a lot of intrigue for the premiere. On the other hand, it proved difficult for the actress, who was reluctant to appear on the red carpet for the film.
Anya Taylor-Joy's Role
In Dune: Part Two, Anya Taylor-Joy plays Alia Atreides, Paul's unborn sister, who appears in his visions for less than a minute of the movie. Remarkably, the fact that Taylor-Joy was playing the character was kept a secret from the rest of the cast, which is why she feared it would be awkward to walk the red carpet with them.
'No one knew, and I begged Denis [Villeneuve] to tell them [that I was on the cast, too]. I was like, "I cannot show up on this carpet and be like, Hey!"' Anya Taylor-Joy said in a recent interview with Stephen Colbert.
Fortunately, the stars were made aware of the actress' involvement in the movie by the time of the premiere, and everything went swimmingly.
A Last Moment Gig
The reason for the secrecy is not the intention to surprise the audience per se. For a long time, there was no way of knowing if Anya would be able to play the role, as she was busy with other projects.
'I really thought that this opportunity was never going to happen. And so I barely knew that it was happening. I did Furiosa. I did a press tour. And on my first day back in LA, [Denis] was like, "Do you want to get on the plane to Namibia?"' the actress said of her elusive cameo in Dune: Part Two, adding that she, of course, accepted Villeneuve's offer.
Anya Taylor-Joy has remained tight-lipped about her involvement in Dune Messiah, which will reportedly jump to the time when her character is born and quite grown up. So the intrigue remains.
