Andy Samberg Totally Lost It in Cringe-Funny Brooklyn Nine-Nine Scene
And Joe Lo Truglio has once again proven his comedic genius.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the kind of show that will have you laughing from the first minute of any episode, keeping you engaged with its hilarious one-liners, dialogues, jokes, and convoluted storylines. It's safe to say that the frequency of jokes in this show ranks among the highest on TV.
Naturally, it's not just the writing that sets Brooklyn Nine-Nine apart as an iconic comedy but also the delivery of those lines. Every single member of the cast is a brilliant comedian, capable of making even the silliest jokes uproariously funny.
Of course, working together on set resulted in some of the funniest moments when even seasoned actors couldn't maintain composure and broke character due to uncontrollable laughter. While many of these unscripted or spontaneous bloopers were edited out, some were kept in, drastically improving the scenes.
A prime example is the cold open of Episode 5 from Season 1, titled The Vulture, where the team discusses their most senior arrests after Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) apprehends an 81-year-old drug dealer. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), misunderstanding the conversation, believes they're discussing the oldest individuals they've been intimate with.
That prompts Boyle's awkwardly amusing tale of his 20-year-old self with a 68-year-old woman. As the detectives catch on to what Boyle is actually talking about, the scene shifts to a blend of hilarity and cringe-worthy second-hand embarrassment while Charles attempts to justify his unconventional romantic encounter.
Truglio's performance in this scene was so stellar that his co-stars were left in stitches. At one moment, it's evident that Andy Samberg is genuinely laughing, and if you listen closely, you can discern him exclaiming 'Joe!' amidst his chuckles. See for yourself.
Melissa Fumero, who portrayed Amy Santiago, confirmed to BuzzFeed that Samberg's on-camera laughter was genuine. However, since he remained in character, the take was kept for the final cut, eventually becoming her favourite cold open.
'Joe [Lo Truglio] is so funny,' she said, recalling the scene. 'I just remember breaking a lot during that, and it was so funny to me. Joe is one of the funniest people alive. Boyle has all the best cold opens.'
Fans universally agree that the combined comedic brilliance of Joe and Andy's authentic reaction elevated this scene to one of the show's best. Makes you want to binge the entire series again, right?
