SATC fans are thankful for the heartwarming cameo.

When the sequel to HBO's hit show Sex and the City premiered in 2021, it garnered mixed reactions from fans and critics. Still, And Just Like That… proved to be popular enough to get renewed for a second season, which was released at the end of June only two weeks after the franchise marked its 25th anniversary.

And just yesterday, the highly anticipated finale of AJLT Season 2 dropped on Max.

It won't be an overstatement to say that the craze around AJLT's second season was largely generated by the news of Kim Cattrall's return to the franchise. The actress who portrayed fan-favorite Samantha Jones in SATC staunchly refused to reprise her iconic role due to a decade-long feud with the show's lead, Sarah Jessica Parker.

But to fans' delight, she finally agreed to a short cameo in the spin-off's finale and even improvised an act within the scene that viewers will never forget.

In the Season 2 final episode titled 'The Last Supper: Entrée,' Carrie sells her apartment from SATC, so she and her friends say goodbye to the iconic location. Samantha's plane from London where she resides gets delayed and consequently she can't make it to New York to honor the apartment in person.

Instead, she gives Carrie a call that she concludes with a sweet, loving smooch on the phone – an action totally improvised by Kim Cattrall.

According to the franchise's showrunner Michael Patrick King, Carrie and Samantha never drifted apart in the SATC-AJLT universe, unlike the actresses. The characters have been in touch via phone all this time, and Cattrall expressed their deep bond through that kiss.

'Something amazing happens after they say goodbye, which is Smantha kisses the phone – not in the script,' King said to his colleagues on AJLT's official podcast. 'It was just totally a moment of an actor playing a moment. And it's really nice.'

Cattrall's improv made the whole finale, let alone that scene, feel truly special. In a roughly minute-long cameo appearance, the actress managed to convey all the feelings the characters had for each other and their long history together. And now, it has become painfully obvious how much the show's lacking without Samantha as one of the central characters.
