5. Coven

While Coven seems to be mostly about witches squabbling for power among themselves, fans have pointed out that it is filled with horrific and vicious scenes. Madame Delphine's torture of her slaves, the gang rape scene, people being burned alive, having their eyes ripped out, and being cut up, and one witch blinding herself with garden shears. These are shocking images that stay with you long after watching.

4. Roanoke

Torture porn are words some fans have used to describe Roanoke. It is among the goriest of the entries on our list, with plenty of scenes to make you squirm and think twice about eating your dinner. It is dark. Violent. Cruel. With such utter malevolence running through it, some fans have commented that they cannot watch it.

3. Cult

Fans all agree on the reasons Cult is one of the creepiest and most disturbing seasons.

When Cult came out, it was both the best and worst timing ever. Best, because the audience could genuinely relate to the subject matter. And worst because that subject matter was terrifying. Some fans have commented that certain aspects remind them of their hometowns, giving the season that extra layer of true horror. It just feels… real.

2. Freak Show

Freak Show had its gory moments but the intense fear and dread we felt was mostly psychological. The innocence of the depicted 'freaks,' including the awful deaths of many, broke our hearts. The true monsters in this season were the perfectly formed humans. Perfectly formed on the outside anyway. As hard as this one is to watch there is a lesson in it…

1. Asylum

The most disturbing season of American Horror Story by far, is Asylum. The vile conditions in which the patients are kept, the brutality of their 'treatments,' and the constant lingering threat that things are only about to get worse, all add up to one horrifying season. Knowing that asylums at that time were very similar to what is depicted, will cause you even more terror.

Honorable Mention – Hotel

A ghastly drill demon and creepy vampire children mean the fifth season, Hotel, deserves a nod. Especially when you add terrifying characters like James Patrick March into the mix.
