A couple of lawsuits can cause your entire fortune to evaporate before your very eyes.

The late 2010s was an incredibly good time for Amber Heard. Participation in big-budget DC Extended Universe movies under contract spanning several years and an offer to become a global ambassador for L'Oréal Paris all indicated that the actress was on the up and up. Her impressive net worth of several million dollars was also expanding.

Unfortunately for Amber, her success came to an abrupt end after the infamous lawsuits she and her ex-husband Johnny Depp filed against each other. Now, more than a year later, her net worth is a mere fraction of what it was just a few years ago. So where did all that money go?

As of 2023, many outlets agree that Amber Heard's net worth is around $500,000, which is incredibly low for an actress of her calibre. Just think about it: between 2013 and 2019, according to Celebrity Net Worth, she made $10 million, including from her multi-million dollar deal to appear in DCEU's Aquaman films, as well as the $1.8 million she got for the TV adaptation of Stephen King's novel, The Stand.

We don't know much about Amber Heard's spending habits, so we can't say how much of her fortune got spent on extravagant purchases, but it seems like the bulk of her net worth got drained by the legal battle with Depp.

Though they officially divorced in 2016, a new conflict flared up after Depp filed a lawsuit seeking $50 million in damages for defamation in a Washington Post op-ed by Heard, in which she accused her ex-husband of harassment and abusive behaviour. In June 2022, Fairfax County, Virginia, found Amber guilty, awarding Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

Although the $5 million was reduced under local law and Heard herself got a $2 million compensation from Depp, she still had to pay $8.35 million. Despite the fact that a lot of the legal costs were covered by insurance, she still ended up having to pay the bulk of the court-awarded damages out of pocket, and at one point, even claimed repeatedly she simply didn't have enough money to meet the outstanding obligations.

After the verdict, the former spouses reached a settlement limited to a $1 million payment from Heard. Although this amount is significantly less, as CNW noted, her net worth before the verdict was estimated at $2.5 million, so the cost of the lawsuits and subsequent payments would have left her practically a pauper.

Hopefully, with the ugly lawsuits behind her and a new Aquaman sequel in her future, Amber Heard's career and financial situation will soon recover.
