Amanda Seyfried Teases Euphoria Star To Rival Sabrina Carpenter In Mamma Mia 3
Amanda Seyfried is ready to dance again in Mamma Mia 3 — and she wants Sydney Sweeney along for the ride, teasing a sequel where Sophie juggles motherhood and a surprise cousin crash-landing on the island.
We are once again manifesting Mamma Mia 3. Amanda Seyfried is very into it, she has thoughts on who should join the party, and the producer keeps saying the right things... but nobody has actually pushed the big green button yet.
Who Amanda wants on the island
In a new chat with Entertainment Tonight, Seyfried pitched a few ringers for a potential threequel. She loves playing a mom and would like to see Sophie juggling kids. She also floated the idea of a long-lost cousin showing up, name-checking Sabrina Carpenter, and tossed Sydney Sweeney into the mix too. According to Seyfried, there are plenty of young stars who want in, and she is not opposed to opening the door.
The Sabrina Carpenter of it all
This is not a random pairing. After Carpenter went viral performing ABBA's 'Mamma Mia' at a show, Seyfried told ABC News she could absolutely see Carpenter in the next film — even as Sophie's daughter if that is the lane they choose. She was so game she joked about leveling up the makeup department just to make it work:
'If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I will make it happen. Old-age makeup for me? Fine. I am an actor. I will do it.'
And Sydney Sweeney?
Sweeney is not just fan-casting fuel. Back in 2023, she told Variety she loves Mamma Mia, has always wanted to go to Greece, and would happily jump into something like that. So if the call comes, she sounds ready.
Is Mamma Mia 3 actually happening?
Short answer: not officially. The long answer is a hopeful string of updates that keep edging the door open without walking through it.
- 2023: Producer Judy Craymer told Deadline the threequel was in early development and that she had cracked a way to bring everyone back.
- 2024: Christine Baranski said Craymer has a full plan for a third movie and is determined to make it happen.
- Meanwhile: Seyfried told ABC News everyone keeps saying it is happening, but she had not seen a script at that point.
- More recently: Craymer told Deadline the movie will happen when it is supposed to, stressed that it matters to her creatively, and teased that it should happen soon.
Translation: lots of positive noise, zero official greenlight.
What would it look like?
Seyfried shared her ideal version with Entertainment Tonight. In her words, the three dads come back and we still do not land on a definitive father — because why start now. Meryl Streep returns in spectral form, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski strut in singing and looking great, the setting is tropical, and the ABBA catalog is obviously blasting. This is her wish list, not confirmed plot.
Who is likely to return?
Optimism is high among the OGs. Seyfried is in if it happens, and Baranski says Craymer has already reached out with story ideas. The original movies starred Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and Dominic Cooper — and Craymer has said she has a way to bring the favorites back. Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney remain just wishful thinking until someone signs a deal.
Bottom line: the vibes are excellent, the interest is real, and the producer keeps nudging us toward yes. Now we wait for an actual announcement. Who do you want to see harmonizing under those Greek skies this time?
