A Definitive Proof Taylor Swift Does Not, In Fact, Have a Beef With Her Exes
A tale of two Taylors.
Taylor Swift is famous for writing what Swifties call diss songs about her exes. So much so that you'd be forgiven for thinking that every former partner of hers has their own track.
But Taylor's latest music video suggests that the idea that she has a beef with all of them is far-fetched. The video for I Can See You, one of six new songs from her re-recorded album Speak Now (Taylor's Version), features Twilight actor Taylor Lautner.
The two were briefly dating in 2009. They met in October when they were both cast in the rom-com Valentine's Day, but split before the year was out. However, the Pennsylvania-born singer wrote a song about Lautner for her 2010 album Speak Now.
Back to December is track 3 on both the original album and the (Taylor's version) released due to her 2019 masters dispute with Big Machine Records, and was confirmed by the man himself in 2016 to be about Lautner.
Swifties had speculated this was the case anyway, as it coincided seamlessly with the couple's split in late 2009. But this song about an ex is a little different. Rather than the brash tone of We Are Never Getting Back Together (which she wrote later in 2010 to address rumours that she was rekindling her flame with Jake Gyllenhaal), it's apologetic and slightly melancholy.
The lyrics seem to suggest that she regrets the break-up and would go 'Back to December' and do things differently if she could. And while there's hardly any chance of getting back together with Lautner, as he's married to another Taylor (Dome), at least they seem to remain friends.
The re-release of Speak Now (Taylor's version) gave Swift the chance to explore songs she wrote around 13 years ago. And inviting Lautner to appear in the video was a nice nod to the time they spent together in 2009 - and their break-up song, which quickly became a fan favourite.
The newly released video allowed Lautner to show off his considerable martial arts skills - and despite the song containing the lyrics 'What would you do if I went to touch you now?', it appears that both Lautner and his wife spent time with Swift on the set. And they went to her concert, with Lautner even appearing on stage to give the singer a hug.
