7 Best UK Sitcoms of the 2010s, According to Reddit
It’s a close-run thing for #1.
The 2010s gave us some great comedy shows. As with every era in TV, as we left the noughties behind, some viewers questioned whether the next generation of humour could match what had been before. And as always, the answer was ‘of course it can’.
Here are the 7 best UK sitcoms according to Reddit:
7. Plebs – Score 77% on Rotten Tomatoes
Following the antics of three lowly Roman lads just trying to get on with life, Plebs has its own anachronistic style of comedy that blends modern concepts with historical restrictions. It’s not exactly authentic Ancient Rome, but it is funny.
6. Outnumbered – Score 82% on Rotten Tomatoes
Every parent can recognise life as portrayed by the cast of Outnumbered. There is a wonderful chemistry in the family and the various interactions are so real. For much of the recordings, only the child actors were given a script (which was pretty loose) to ensure authenticity in the way the different generations communicated.
5. Friday Night Dinner – Score 86% on Rotten Tomatoes
While focusing on the regular Friday night dinner in a middle-class Jewish household, elements of Friday Night Dinner no doubt resonated with lots of families of all faiths and none. At its heart, it was a comedy about family dynamics, but unlike My Family, it felt relatable. And unlike Mrs Brown’s Boys, it was funny.
4. This Country – Score 96% on Rotten Tomatoes
Try explaining this show to anybody and you’ll find yourself wondering why you’re recommending it. Certainly, you’ll finish off by saying, “But it’s funny”. But it’s one of those shows that highlights life as it is. It deals with friendships, hopes, life’s troubles, and reality. And it does it all through the lens of relatable comedy moments.
3. Derry Girls – Score 99% on Rotten Tomatoes
There’s something nostalgic about any kind of coming-of-age comedy. Whilst the Derry Girls’ adventures may have been exacerbated for comic effect, the ways in which their lives were changing were familiar to viewers. Add great casting, acting and writing into the mix, and you’ve got a hit. Set against the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement, though, this show had an added poignancy for many.
2. Fleabag – Score 100% (Avg. Audience Score 93%) on Rotten Tomatoes
The multi-award-winning hit created by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge deserves its 100% score. It was new, fresh, exciting – and very funny. Fleabag’s outlook on life was one of confusion, anger and a certain amount of scepticism. And the decision to break the fourth wall and have her speak directly to the audience made her loveable despite that. Genius!
1. Detectorists – Score 100% (Avg. Audience Score 94%) on Rotten Tomatoes
Metal detecting isn’t the sexiest pastime, but let’s be honest, we all get heavily involved in the things we love regardless of anybody else’s level of interest in it. This show is a celebration of the passion people have for their hobbies. And that story is told to the backdrop of gentle but hilarious comedy.
