7 Best British Sitcoms on Netflix You Can Watch Right Now
Number 2 might surprise you.
If you love a bit of comedy and are looking for your next fix of Netflix, we've put together this list of the 7 best British sitcoms available on Netflix right now.
7. Still Game (2002-2019)
Set in Glasgow and making good use of the local dialect, it's fair to say this sitcom paints a fairly stereotypical picture of life in Scotland. There's a lot of swearing, so it's not one for the easily offended, but it's a funny tale of a group of pensioners who still get up to plenty of tricks despite their age. It lasted for 9 seasons and 63 episodes.
6. White Gold (2017-2019)
There are just 2 seasons of this show that capitalises on 80s nostalgia. Inbetweeners stars James Buckley and Joe Thomas reunite as a couple of junior salesmen in an Essex UPVC window sales company. It features plenty of humour and some pretty ruthless sales techniques, with one IMDB review calling it 'the perfect marriage of Only Fools & Horses with Wolf of Wall Street'.
5. Desmond's (1989 – 1994)
Set across 6 seasons and almost entirely in a South London barbershop run by Desmond (Norman Beaton), this show focused on the lives of Caribbean immigrants to Britain. It offered a unique insight to Anglo-Caribbean culture and explored the hopes and dreams of Desmond (who was desperate to return to his native Guyana) and his sons and daughters whose ambitions lay very much in early 90s Britain.
4. Derry Girls (2018 – 2022)
Not quite a dark comedy and not quite a teen comedy, the three seasons of this coming-of-age sitcom look at life in Derry amid 'The Troubles' and the path towards the Good Friday Agreement. A lot of it is just plain funny, but there is a poignancy to the show that gives it an edge and makes this one of the best comedies of recent years.
3. The IT Crowd (2006 – 2013)
Starring Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade and Katherine Parkinson, this geek-chic comedy tells the story of a couple of nerds (Roy and Moss) and their technophobic colleague (Jen) who really shouldn't have been employed but does prove useful in helping them interact with other real human beings.
2. Derek (2012 - 2014)
It's not always laugh-out-loud, but Ricky Gervais' portrayal of a kind-hearted care home employee who loves animals is charming and you can't help but root for him. Much of the comedy comes from Kev (David Earl) and Dougie (Karl Pilkington), and Kerri Godliman (as care home manager Hannah) holds the whole thing together. As you'd expect from a Gervais show, there are only 2 seasons.
1. Peep Show (2003 – 2015)
Robert Webb and David Mitchel star in a ground-breaking comedy that follows Mark and Jez, two dysfunctional friends with very different outlooks on life. Don't expect character development – this is all about poking fun at the mundanity of life.
