The highly anticipated season 3 installment of Bridgerton skips the third book, following the fourth book to tell the story of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, and that brings along some other big changes.

Season 3 time jump

Season 3 follows the storyline of the fourth book, Romancing Mr Bridgerton, which takes place in 1824, nearly a decade later than where we left off in season 2.

One of the biggest contributors to the time jump was Colin's years-long trip to Europe, which he had already returned from after just a few months in season 2. We can't skip a whole book and not have a time jump, and expect season 3 to start somewhere in the middle of 1815 and 1824.

Cressida Cowper becomes the real antagonist

Fans are no stranger to Cressida and her 'mean girl' antics, but season 3 will see her take the stage as the villain after discovering that Penelope is Lady Whistledown, and subsequently blackmailing her. Her wicked tactics will eventually push Penelope over the edge, and lead to the revelation everyone in the Ton has been waiting for.

Unmasking Lady Whistledown

Madam Delacroix and Eloise Bridgerton make up the few who know the identity of the mysterious scandal column writer, but that will also be different in season 3.

Penelope reveals herself to Colin in the beginning of the 4th book, and the scandal with Cressida is set to see Penelope exposing her identity to the public.

Benedict Bridgerton's story

Benedict's book sees him falling in love with Sophie Beckett, so where does this leave him in season 3? He could already be married, with his story eventually revisited or his romance could be left out of season 3 completely.

Daphne will be missing

Actress Phoebe Dynevor has confirmed that she will 'watch season 3 as a viewer.' Daphne Bridgerton, whose romance with the Duke of Hastings took center stage in the first season, was meant to play a pivotal role in Colin and Penelope's love story.

Daphne's chats with Colin are fundamental in him recognizing his love for Penelope. With Daphne absent, Colin will likely have to communicate with her via letters, or ultimately seek the advice of another sister, like Francesca.

Eloise's story will completely change

In book 4, Eloise realizes that her and Penelope are not going to grow old together as spinsters, which opens her up to exchanges with Sir Phillip. However, Season 2 started a spark between Eloise and Theo Sharpe, and ended with Penelope and Eloise in conflict.

If season 3 wants to follow the book, many things would change. Marina would have to die in order for Eloise and Sir Phillip to begin writing to each other, and they would have to be introduced by Colin.

We can expect more drama, more twists, and another captivating love story in Bridgerton season 3. Now all that we need is a release date.
