5 Young Sheldon Storylines the Show Would've Been Better Off Without
The TBBT prequel has a lot of bad storylines.
Unlike The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon is very neat when it comes to storylines as they are woven into the fabric of the larger plot. However, some of those stories have reflected poorly on the overall quality of the show.
Here are five storylines that simply didn't need to be on YS.
Jana and Georgie
Georgie wasn't really in the spotlight before Season 7, but when he was, he had some of Young Sheldon's best storylines. Georgie and Veronica's relationship arc is still beloved by many viewers who consider her the best Georgie could get in life, even though he is now married with a child. But Veronica disappeared and Jana came to take her place. However, she did not impress the audience at all, which is why she is largely considered a superfluous filler for the plot.
Sheldon and Georgie's Bully
In earlier seasons, Georgie wasn't the best brother to Shelly, but it's still too cruel of Sheldon to use his brother's bully to get back at him. In Season 2, Episode 13, the young genius befriended Georgie's bully and manipulated him to control Georgie, which just shows how mean Shelly can be without adding much to the plot.
Dr. Sturgis Leaving Science Behind
Dr. John Sturgis is one of the most popular characters on Young Sheldon. He is smart. He is quirky. He is funny. And he is extremely nice. But just like Sheldon, he has a hard time fitting in and building relationships in general. So no one wants to make his life any harder than it already is. And in that sense, his losing his passion for science arc and working at a grocery store was too painful to watch.
Dr. Sturgis Mental Health Issues
It is important to portray neurodivergence and destigmatize mental illness in general, but in the case of Dr. Sturgis, it seemed far-fetched and inappropriate. His whole psychosis storyline seemed to exist so that he and Connie could later break up, which was ugly. They could just split up because of their many differences. And there was no need to make Dr. Sturgis look even more dysfunctional.
Mandy and Georgie
This duo's relationship is fascinating to watch. But it seems to have completely overtaken the show in Season 7. Currently, Young Sheldon is not so much a show about the title character as it is a setup for the upcoming Mandy and Georgie-centric spin-off. It would have been much better if they had remained supporting characters, with YS focusing on Shelly as it used to.
Episodes 11 and 12 of Season 7 will premiere on May 9.
