Despite its controversial finale, How I Met Your Mother remains one of the best sitcoms out there for many fans. The Manhattan gang and their friendship dynamics are so compelling and hilarious, it's impossible not to love the show and each of its characters.

However, some viewers found it hard to relate to one particular member of the gang, as her reactions and behavior often seemed to go over the top. Yep, we're talking about Lily Aldrin, Marshall's Lilypad.

She broke off her engagement to Marshall

Of course, the main thing that doesn't sit right with the fans is Lily's decision to break off her engagement to Marshall in the Season 1 finale. Lily was having an identity crisis and fled to San Francisco to pursue her dreams, leaving her best friend and longtime boyfriend in total ruin.

When her artistic career didn't pan out, Lily came back, making all fans wonder — would she have stayed with Marshall if her talent had been recognized?

She ran up a huge debt

Lily is a shopaholic and drowns her stress in buying expensive brand-name clothes. She ran up a huge credit card debt, which became a problem when the couple decided to buy an apartment. What's worse, Lily hid this issue from Marshall and talked to him about it only when he learned about her debt from a stranger.

She is an irresponsible teacher

Several times in the show, Lily leaves her kindergarten class without supervision, saying something like, 'Everybody, just color!' and then going off to take care of her own things.

She also once let Barney take over her group, sent the wrong letter to a parent, told the class that one of the kids' parents were getting divorced, and much, much more.

She treats adults like kindergartners

While it often serves as a comedic device, the way Lily treats adults like the children in her class sometimes jeopardizes her friends' relationships and future. For example, she once took away Ted's boss' baseball for being mean, which could easily destroy Ted's career.

She sabotages Ted's relationships

In one of the later episodes, it was revealed that Lily had been sabotaging Ted's relationships for years. For one selfish reason or another, she was never okay with Ted's girlfriends and did everything she could to break them up. Worse, she even tried to sabotage Ted and Robin over a $5 bet!
