5 Vampire Diaries Characters That Shouldn't Have Died, According to Reddit
Their deaths hurt the show.
Throughout its eighth-season run, The Vampire Diaries experienced numerous deaths. Some were tragic and heartbreaking, propelling the story forward, while others seemed entirely unnecessary and detrimental to the supernatural drama.
According to Reddit, these five characters should never have died.
Lexi Branson
Introduced in Episode 8 of Season 1 as Stefan Salvatore's best friend, Lexi was an instantly lovable, fun, and optimistic 300-year-old vampire who lived in the present and offered excellent advice. Fans were outraged when Damon Salvatore killed her in the same episode she first appeared in.
Damon killed Lexi to frame her for terrorising Mystic Falls, and fans were frustrated that Stefan forgave him for it afterwards. Many believe that the show would have benefited from Lexi becoming a recurring character.
Enzo St. John
Fans also argue that the vampire Enzo, Damon's friend and Bonnie Bennett's love interest, should have been kept alive. He had a long and compelling arc throughout the series, culminating in a sweet romance with Bonnie in Season 8. Just as viewers began to believe Bonnie had found happiness, Stefan killed Enzo by ripping out his heart. Fans feel that Enzo's death was unnecessary and that he and Bonnie should have received the happy ending they deserved.
Tyler Lockwood
Tyler, whose character arc was one of the most complex in The Vampire Diaries, appeared in all eight seasons of the show. He began as an arrogant high school student, transformed into a werewolf, then a hybrid, and finally a werewolf again.
Over time, viewers grew to love Tyler and were disappointed when he became another victim of Damon in the final season. By that point, Tyler had already left Mystic Falls, and fans feel that his death was pointless and contributed nothing to the plot except another reason to be disappointed in Damon.
Dr. Jo Laughlin
Jo appeared and died in Season 6. Although she was a witch, she refused to use her powers and pursued a career as a doctor. Jo became pregnant with twins, fathered by Alaric Saltzman, and the couple decided to marry. Tragically, at the wedding, Jo's twin brother Kai stabbed her with a magic knife, killing her.
Fans found Jo's death extremely cruel and believe, in hindsight, she should have been allowed to watch her children grow up.
Stefan Salvatore
The most mourned death in The Vampire Diaries occurred in the finale when Stefan sacrificed his life to save Mystic Falls and give his brother a chance at a normal life with Elena. While this completed his redemption arc, many fans feel that Stefan's death was completely unnecessary and poorly justified.
