You may not have heard of this film. But you've almost certainly heard of James Wan, who directed Saw. In this low-budget horror, a couple (Jamie and Lisa) receive a ventriloquist's dummy in the post that makes no sense to them. Then Lisa is killed and her tongue cut out. And the history of this small town and of Jamie's family begins to emerge.

2. Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005)

As you might expect, this film explores the internal conflict suffered by a young Father Lankester Merrin. Forced to participate in executions by Nazi soldiers, Father Merrin's faith is tested. Three years later, he is working as an archaeologist in Kenya when the bodies of two British soldiers are found. And things aren't what they seem.

Based on the video game of the same name, this horror film follows a young girl who is taken to the abandoned town of Silent Hill after having repeated nightmares about the place. Her strange behaviour there is worrying, and things are about to get a lot worse. It's creepy and gory in equal measure; perfect for Halloween.

5. Ginger Snaps (2000)

High school drama meets a werewolf movie that's actually worth watching. One night, while two sisters (Brigitte and Ginger) are out, Ginger is bitten by a werewolf. The creature is then killed by a passing van. When Ginger starts behaving strangely, Brigitte is desperate to find out why.

If you prefer one of the Halloween classics, go for it. But October is a long month, and it's worth finding time to watch some of these horror films that don't get the recognition they deserve.
