5 Romantic Movies Without Happy Endings if You Want to Cry Your Eyes Out

A chance meeting on a train between an American and a French woman and two Japanese teenagers who swap bodies.
Movies often focus on the stories of established relationships, but no less interesting are films about happiness that never happened.
We recall five touching movies about love without a happy ending that will definitely touch the strings of your heart.
1. Before Sunrise, 1995
Richard Linklater is known for his passion for projects that capture the real flow of time. Before Sunrise begins a trilogy of films about the characters of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, the parts of which were released with an interval of nine years.
Jesse, an American, and Celine, a Frenchwoman, meet on a train and, after a brief conversation, decide to get off in Vienna and spend a day and a night together. The movie finds the young people in a bad mood – both have recently experienced a breakup.
A chance meeting on the train tears Jesse and Celine out of their usual routines, and an agreement to spend a day together turns a walk through the city into a unique romantic adventure that will be remembered for a lifetime.
2. Your Name, 2016
Makoto Shinkai's Your Name became a worldwide sensation, grossing over $350 million at the box office and knocking Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away off the top spot on the list of highest-grossing anime.
A Tokyo teen, Taki, and a provincial girl, Mitsuha, change bodies in their sleep several times a week. One day the strange connection is broken. Taki goes in search of Mitsuha, with whom he seems to have fallen in love.
Your Name combines a fantastic plot with a body-swap and a story of first love. But the surprises in Shinkai's anime do not end there – the movie will surprise the viewer even closer to the end.
3. Casablanca, 1942
Michael Curtiz's melodrama is not only a masterpiece of Hollywood's Golden Age, it hasn't aged a bit. In December 1941, at the height of World War II, the Moroccan city became a transit point for refugees fleeing Europe.
In Casablanca, Rick's former lover Ilsa and her husband Victor, the leader of the Czech resistance, arrive at a gambling club. Rick can help the couple secure visas, but then he must put duty before emotion.
4. The Great Gatsby, 2013
A patient at a closed clinic, Nick Carraway, recalls the summer of 1922, when he rented a house on Long Island and met Jay Gatsby, who threw the most dazzling parties the whole area was talking about.
Nick also witnesses Gatsby's affair with married aristocrat Daisy Buchanan. Baz Luhrmann's movie impresses with its perfectly chosen jazz soundtrack, luxurious costumes and tragic love story.
The author, like the narrator in the movie, looks back with longing and regrets that the glorious era can never be restored.
5. Chungking Express, 1994
Chungking Express is two parallel love stories set on the streets of a neon-lit, 24-hour-a-day metropolis. On the night of May 1, 1994, police officer #223, who has recently broken up with his girlfriend, meets a blonde in trouble with the law in a bar.
And another police officer, #663, is dumped by a flight attendant. The flight attendant leaves the keys to the cop's apartment in a diner where the dreamer Faye works. The diner employee starts visiting #663's apartment, trying to change his life.
