5 Reasons Young Sheldon Ignoring George's Cheating Scandal is a Good Thing
What if the story of George's infidelity were never to happen?
Every Young Sheldon fan knows about a few storylines that were spoiled on The Big Bang Theory and are supposed to be featured in the prequel. One of those storylines is George Sr.'s cheating scandal — as adult Sheldon revealed in TBBT, he walked in on his father having sex with a woman that wasn't his mother, and that caused some of his neurotic behavior.
Many viewers were expecting to see the dramatic incident in the current season, but it looks like the creators have decided to skip it altogether. And this might actually be a good move, according to fans — here's why.
It would destroy George's character
The Young Sheldon George and the George from TBBT seem to be two completely different characters. While the former is a bad father and husband, a hopeless drunk, and a couch potato who doesn't care about his family, the latter is actually not so bad.
Time and again, he proved to be a good father and a decent husband, and many came to love him as a character. If presented, the cheating scandal would be completely out of character for the George introduced in Young Sheldon.
It would cancel Brenda as a character
If George were to cheat with anyone, it would most likely be Brenda Sparks — there was never any indication that George was sneaking around with anyone other than the Coopers' neighbor.
But Brenda seems to have moved on from flirting with George. She and Mary have more or less patched things up, so a betrayal at this point would go completely against Brenda's whole arc.
It wouldn't make much difference to Sheldon's development
It's believed that Sheldon got his adult issues from childhood traumas, such as catching his father cheating. But if we look closer, it was George's death that was the biggest trigger for Sheldon's problems. His habit of knocking three times was all that the infidelity scandal led to. But is it really that important to his arc?
It would drastically change the dynamics of the Coopers
George's cheating is set to result in a divorce that is sure to wreak havoc on the entire family. The sitcom revolves around the relationships within the Cooper clan and the dynamic that's been built over the seasons, and fans aren't sure if the show would be able to go on if that dynamic is ruined.
It would hurt the tone of the show
The cheating storyline and the events that follow are too dark for many fans. Young Sheldon is, first and foremost, a light-hearted comedy series that is easy to watch because nothing too bad is expected to happen. If the creators decided to show the infidelity scandal, that tone would be impossible to maintain, turning viewers away from the beloved sitcom.
The next episode of Young Sheldon will arrive on CBS on May 4, 2023.
