As great as it was, the show has run its natural course.

After the overwhelming success of The Big Bang Theory, its prequel was always going to garner a decent viewership. But the end of season 7 is the right time to call it quits.

Here's why:

1. The title of the show

It's called Young Sheldon. The trajectory of season 6 brought us closer to the affair we know George will have, making Sheldon 14. While "young" is a subjective term, in the context of the show, it makes no sense to continue beyond that point.

2. The fallout from the affair

We know that George dies shortly after Sheldon discovers his father's infidelity. But the show will have to find a way to tackle the fallout from one of its most popular characters cheating on his wife and being caught by his son.

While this situation has a lot of comic potential, none of it fits the tone of Young Sheldon.

3. The elephant in the room

The biggest problem Young Sheldon has created for itself is that its portrayal of George has made fans like him. He is no longer the useless layabout we knew from descriptions of him on The Big Bang Theory. Now he's a lovable but flawed father trying to do the best he can. And killing him off is going to be tough.

Leaving out a massive part of what viewers have always come to expect from the show. But it can be done. Imagine the final scene of young Sheldon being him opening the bedroom door and looking shocked.

4. The show can't go Georgeless

The other option would be to have George die and then go on with the show. But wouldn't that be a different kind of show? And in any case, Sheldon leaves the family home shortly after George dies.

Despite George's popularity, the writers of Young Sheldon have to find a way to wrap things up at the end of season 7, even if it means portraying his death. Anything else will feel like cheating.

5. The good of the franchise

Young Sheldon is based on predetermined events and simply doesn't have the same scope as The Big Bang Theory. Trying to drag it out would risk damaging the legacy of the show and the reputation of the franchise. A better option would be to create another spinoff that explores the world of TBBT from a different angle. As for Young Sheldon, season 7 is the time to bow out gracefully.
