The Modern Family actress is not a suitable host for the CBS show.

Dating shows are the most popular type of reality TV, and part of their appeal comes from the charming personalities who host the projects. A staple of British TV, Love Island was picked up by CBS in 2019, with Arielle Vandenberg leading the American show as a host. In Season 4, however, the beloved host was replaced by Modern Family's alum Sarah Hyland, and fans did not like the change one bit.

Now airing its fifth season, Love Island is still hosted by Hyland, who serves as the only communicator between the contestants (the Islanders) and the outside world. Over her two seasons on the project, viewers did not come to appreciate the new host, and here are five reasons why.

5. Arielle was real

Many viewers believe that Arielle felt more convincing and genuine in her role as the show's host. She seemed to have bonded with the Islanders strongly, and it looked like the star was more involved in their lives and really took care of them, fans say.

4. Hyland comes off as insincere

By contrast, Sarah Hyland's performance feels feigned for the cameras. Being an experienced actress, she must have approached her hosting duties in the same way as her movie roles, not realizing that a reality show is a whole different beast. Fans say the actress needs to drop the pretense and act like a normal human being instead.

3. Her comments are cringey

During her three seasons on Love Island, Arielle really mastered the craft of hosting a reality show: she knew what to say and when her commentary was appropriate. Hyland, on the other hand, often says things that feel out of place and sound cringeworthy just because they're not uttered at the right time.

That's why many fans admit her performance makes them feel awkward.

2. Her jokes aren't funny

Let's face it, we loved Arielle's brilliant jokes and one-liners, but Hyland's humor just doesn't do the thing. For a show like Love Island, humor is a crucial component, bringing luster and zest to the overdramatized spectacle. Without the funnies, the reality action is bland and not that exciting to follow.

1. Love Island needs no host

As a matter of fact, lots of people point out that Love Island may not even need a host in the first place. Though not allowed to communicate with the outside world directly, the Islanders have special smartphones to exchange messages and receive news and tasks from the producers, so Sarah Hyland's role on the project is somewhat redundant.
