5 Key Reasons Pretty Much Everyone Hates Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Now
The season turned out to be one big cringefest.
Sweet Magnolias is one of the most comforting romance shows to hit Netflix in years. Based on Sherryl Woods' novel series of the same name, the show tells the story of three best friends from South Carolina who deal with romantic twists and turns and share joyful moments together.
The third season of the show was greeted with a lot of enthusiasm from fans, but unfortunately, their hopes were crushed almost immediately. Even though the first season also had its share of problems, it looks like the cringe factor reached its peak in Season 2, leaving many viewers disappointed about the show's quality.
Here are five reasons why Sweet Magnolias Season 3 has been so badly panned.
5. Theme song
Don't get us wrong, Nickel Creek is a great band that, despite being from California, perfectly captures the aesthetic of the American South through their beautiful bluegrass songs. However, their track 'Destination,' which has been the theme song for three seasons in a row, has simply bored many fans who want to hit the 'skip intro' button as soon as possible.
4. Over-romanticization of the South
You get the feeling that Dixie is some sort of fairy-tale place, resembling some rich California towns, with the only difference being the cartoonishly thick accent. Most fans who live in the southern states find this annoying and say that the overly sterile town looks quite unrealistic.
3. Helen and Maddie are irritating
Both Helen and Maddie are well-developed characters with whom you want to empathize, but this season, the protagonists suffer from too much scripted dramatization. Helen's expressions are deliberately theatricalized, and Maddie is made to whine for no good reason while fans want to see her as a strong and inspiring woman dealing with the difficulties of her forties.
2. Most side characters are bland
The secondary characters do not help either. Bill's behavior and surreal accent are repulsive, and Noreen has been an unnecessary character since Season 1 (and she hasn't grown in the current season either). Besides, the storylines with the characters' children are so flat that many viewers confuse Nellie and Annie, Jackson and Tyler.
1. Romance storylines are cringey
Daniel L. Paulson Productions, which creates Sweet Magnolias, is also responsible for many projects for Hallmark, and you can really feel that in the Netflix show. Instead of realistic love stories, we get melodramatic, cheesy plotlines with peachy undertones, which simply don't appeal to fans.
