Netflix's Heartstopper is based on a series of graphic novels by Alice Oseman. Furthermore, Oseman is the show's sole screenwriter, ensuring the series remains as close to the source material as possible. In fact, it features plenty of scenes that quote the graphic novels verbatim.
But the live-action story still differs from the printed version, sometimes requiring new characters and scenes. Here are five amazing Heartstopper moments you won't find in the novels.
S1E2 Crush on Straight Boy
Since Mr. Ajayi doesn't appear in the books until the Paris trip, all of his Season 1 scenes with Charlie were written especially for the show, and they're all a real treat. This man is simply the best teacher possible and a hilarious human being.
Remember his 'Wow. Being a teenager is terrible' line when Charlie tried to get his advice about crushing on a straight boy (or so he thought at the time), Nick.
S1E8 Sports Day
Sports Day, which takes place in the Season 1 finale, doesn't appear in the source material and yet serves as a great way to wrap up the first part of Nick and Charlie's story. Probably the sweetest moment came with the boys' declarations in the hallway.
'My life is way better because I met you,' Nick says in the scene. 'You're my favorite person; I need you to believe me.'
S2E3 Coming Out Talk
Nick has a hard time coming out to his family and school friends in Season 2. And the scene between Nick and Charlie, added by Oseman in Episode 3 after the bonfire party, is a heartwarming reminder to anyone who can relate: don't feel pressured.
'I think there's this idea that when you're not straight, you need to tell all your friends and family immediately. Like you owe it to them, but you don't,' Charlie tells Nick, trying to make him feel more at ease.
Could a boyfriend get any more supportive?
S2E6 Escaping Parties
Nick and Charlie have many heartwarming scenes in Season 2, most of which are taken from the comic books. In one of the last episodes, however, there is an original scene that references the kiss at Harry's party in S1E3.
The boys are sitting on a terrace in the moonlight while a party is raging inside, and Nick notes that they 'keep escaping parties to hang out with each other.' When Charlie asks if this is their thing now, Nick says, 'I hope so. Not running away this time, though.'
Awww. These two can't get enough of each other, and we're here for it.
S2E7 Confrontation with Ben
Ben's role on the show was much bigger than in the books. So, the moment when Charlie stands up to him is original, but it adds a lot to the story and sends a great message about the importance of consent in a relationship.
'I'm glad you realize what you did was wrong, but you don't get to ambush me into forgiving you,' our beloved, brave protagonist says.
