Rotten Tomatoes Drops the Hammer on M3GAN 2.0

M3GAN 2.0 had its big premiere in New York on June 24, and while the killer doll is back in action starting June 27, her Rotten Tomatoes score is already slipping.
As of now, critics have the sequel sitting at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes from 48 reviews — not terrible, but a noticeable dip from the first film's surprise success in 2022, when people went in expecting trash and came out laughing, screaming, and dancing in the hallways. This time? The reactions are all over the place.
The Plot (Yes, There Is One)
The story jumps two years ahead. Gemma (Allison Williams) is now a public anti-AI advocate, despite literally building a murder doll. Meanwhile, she's got the original M3GAN stored away in her tech closet. But when a new military-grade robot named AMELIA gains sentience (because of course she does), Gemma's niece convinces her to reboot M3GAN — now sleeker, smarter, and apparently way more into fight scenes.
Critics: From "Campy Fun" to "T3RRIBL3"
Reactions range from delight to disbelief. Some are here for the chaos:
- "Imagine John Waters at the helm of a Terminator 2 remake." – Justin Clark
- "Good, silly fun... even if it's not quite Aliens or T2." – Fred Topel
- "Commendation for getting rounds of laughter out of a Kate Bush needle drop and Clippy." – Laura Clifford
Others think the sequel learned all the wrong lessons:
- "Absolutely T3RRIBL3. It's like no one remembered what made the original fun." – Donald Clarke
- "Derivative, bewildering, and bland." – Kristy Puchko
- "M3GAN works when she's front and center, but the plot is buried under some ‘80s techno soup." – Kristen Lopez
Reddit: Divided But Entertained
Reddit's split too. Some fans came in expecting horror and got... well, a sci-fi action comedy wearing horror's skin.
- "It looked more like a comedy than anything." – thavillain
- "Campy as hell. Some will like that, others won't." – DarkMattersConfusing
- "Honestly, I wanted this direction from the start. The first movie teased it in the trailer, then chickened out." – Skeet_fighter
- "They were so proud of that ‘hold onto your vaginas' line, they put it in both trailers." – KingOfSquirrels
One top-voted take summed it up:
"The original accidentally stumbled into camp. This one's trying to manufacture it. That's way harder to pull off." – WaterMagician
Still, some fans are willing to roll with it:
"Heart Eyes was a 6, but a damn good 6." – Twisted_Taterz- "A damned good 6 is a 7." – temple3489
M3GAN 2.0 leans into the weird. It's faster, louder, and ditching horror in favor of full-throttle camp. If that's your thing, great — there are laughs, fights, and yes, Clippy. If you wanted another sleek horror-comedy hybrid with sharp satire and creepy tension? You might find yourself longing for Version 1.0.
Either way, the doll's back — and she's either killing expectations or just killing time.
