You won’t believe who’s at the top of that list.
Sir Ian McKellen is an incredibly accomplished and renowned actor who has appeared in many high-grossing films throughout his illustrious career, from the X-Men franchise to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Yet, despite his notable success, he finds himself at the very bottom of this year's list of the top 10 richest British actors, with a net worth of $75M (£60.5M).
What's more surprising are the actors on the list who have earned more than him, even though their careers have been much shorter.
Who were the other actors to appear on the list
Among Sir Ian McKellen, who was listed as the tenth richest British actor, Dumbledore actor Jude Law was placed above him. One of the only other much older actors to appear on the list was renowned actor Sir Michael Caine. Higher up the list, breaking the hundred-million line includes both Batmans, Robert Pattinson and Christian Bale. As well as Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe and rom-com star Hugh Grant.

Why Sir Ian isn't as wealthy as you think
Although the celebrated screen and stage actor has become well-known as popular characters in some of the most successful franchises to date, he has not appeared in a big-budget movie since 2017, when he had a supporting role as Cogsworth in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast. However, many of his peers on the list have continued to act in higher-grossing movies and franchises in recent years.
McKellen is one of only three older actors to appear on the list. The others are Sir Michael Caine and Sir Anthony Hopkins. While they have received higher earnings over their equally successful careers, Sir Ian McKellen found critical acclaim much later. Only becoming known well to global audiences by the early 2000s.
Caine and Hopkins' affluent careers have therefore spanned much longer. As for the younger actors on the list, including Daniel Radcliffe and Robert Pattinson, they have benefitted from more recent success, which has helped significantly boost their net worth.
Of course, despite his placement on the list, it is important to recognize the immense talent and contributions that Sir Ian McKellen has made to the entertainment industry throughout his lengthy and successful career. From his acclaimed Shakespearean performances to his iconic portrayal of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings franchise, Sir Ian McKellen has left an undeniable mark in cinema, theatre, and the arts.
