No, it has nothing to do with the multiverse.

After a hiatus of more than three years, Good Omens is gearing up to treat its fans to a new chapter in the adventures of the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale, coming out on July 28. David Tennant and Michael Sheen are not the only ones returning to the universe based on Biblical themes and characters, as we'll get to see more familiar faces from the first season — even though those actors' character arcs have been completed.

It was announced earlier that Maggie Service and Nina Sosanya, who played Sister Theresa Garrulous and Sister Mary Loquacious, members of the order responsible for the Antichrist's misplacement, would land new roles in Good Omens Season 2. The decision to recast actors for new roles is unusual for any show, except maybe the anthology series American Horror Story, so it got fans wondering if the recasting had anything to do with the plot of the upcoming season.

One curious fan took to Neil Gaiman's Tumblr to ask the author directly if any of the fan theories were true.

'Have Maggie Service and Nina Sosanya been cast again as different characters just because of how iconic and lovable they are? Or is it a butterfly effect, if there was no antichrist to form the Satanic Order around (Adam's human now after all), are Nina and Maggie (the characters) who Sister Mary Loquacious and Sister Theresa Garrulous actually became on this alternate timeline?' the fan asked.

To the dismay of some fans, the iconic author debunked the multiverse theory, explaining that the timeline of Season 2 is the direct continuation of the premiere season. As for the actresses, Gaiman said that they will be playing completely new roles and that he decided to cast them because they felt like a perfect fit.

'I wanted them in the show again, and I couldn't think of anyone I wanted in those roles except for them. There's a Good Omens family and Maggie and Nina are part of it,' the author wrote.

Service and Sosanya will play two small business owners who share the actresses' names and run shops next door to Aziraphale's bookstore.

In addition, it's been revealed that two other original cast members are set to play new characters in Season 2. Miranda Richardson, known to Good Omens fans as Madame Tracy, will appear as Shacks, the demon who takes over Crowley's position, while the new role of Reese Shearsmith, who played William Shakespeare, hasn't been announced yet.

Looks like the Good Omens family is just not ready to break up and will continue to bring us new characters with familiar, likable faces, American Horror Story-style.
