15 Lesser-Known Shows to Watch If You're Going Through Ted Lasso Withdrawal Like Us

What do you do when one of the best shows on TV ends and you find you’re missing it?

You watch other shows that are just as good – even if you’d never heard of them until some kind soul wrote an article on shows to watch if you’re missing Ted Lasso.

1. Shrinking – Apple TV

Shrinking follows Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel), a grieving widow and therapist at a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Centre.

He starts telling his patients what he really thinks – with hilarious consequences. Harrison Ford stars as senior therapist Dr. Paul Rhoades, who is unconvinced by this new approach.

2. Acapulco – Apple TV

A Mexican comedy set in Acapulco in 1984. It follows the fortunes of a young boy from a poor background who has always dreamed of working at Mexico’s hottest resort – Las Colinas.

When he finally lands the job, it’s not quite what he had dreamed of.

3. A Million Little Things – ABC

More drama than comedy, this show focuses on a group of friends, one of whom commits suicide at the outset. That may not seem like the opening to a feel-good show, but the event prompts the others to realise life is for living.

4. Detectorists - BBC

Written and directed by Mackenzie Crook, this show is like a bowl of hot soup – comforting and massively underrated. It’s gone under the radar but is so funny.

It tracks the trials and tribulations of Andy (Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones), two metal detectorists who can’t get enough of their hobby.

5. Kim’s Convenience – CBC

This Canadian drama centres around the lives of a family of Korean immigrants who run a grocery store in Toronto. It strikes a nice balance between the political hot potato of immigration and the family dynamic - and never gets too deep.

Some of the dialogue is superb.

6. Our Flag Means Death – HBO Max

New Zealand comic Rhys Darby stars as the real-life ‘Gentleman Pirate’ Stede Bonnet. That’s pretty much where the historical accuracy ends. But the premise of the show opens up a whole world of ideas for comic situations.

Taika Waititi stars opposite Darby as Blackbeard - another true figure from the golden age of piracy.

7. What We Do in the Shadows – FX

A mockumentary about a group of New York vampires intent on taking over the Western Hemisphere.

The comedy largely comes from their attempts at interacting with society which, as you can imagine, don’t often go to plan. The show features guest appearances by stars including David Bautista and Wesley Snipes.

8. Community – NBC/Yahoo! Screen

A little-known comedy that stars Chevy Chase. Set in a community college, it follows the fortunes of Jeff Winger, a disgraced former lawyer. Struck off after it was revealed he doesn’t have a law degree, Winger returns to college determined to earn one.

9. Somebody Somewhere – HBO Max

Bridget Everett stars as Sam, a 40-something woman in Chicago who is struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister. It’s loosely based on the life of Everett (who co-produced the show) and follows Sam as she has something of a midlife crisis.

10. The Afterparty – Apple TV

A comedy murder mystery starring Tiffany Haddish and Sam Richardson. A high school reunion turns nasty when a murder occurs. And each episode of the show charts the events of the evening from the point of view of a different attendee.

It’s very funny and is an interesting new twist on an age-old TV premise.

11. The Bear – Hulu

Fresh from the world of New York fine dining, a young chef (Jeremy Allen White) finds himself in Chicago trying to run the family beef sandwich shop. Unlike his usual kitchen, this place is chock full of poor equipment and staff who don’t care.

And to top things off, he has huge debts to contend with.

12. Hart of Dixie – The CW

This show mimics the “fish out of water” aspect of Ted Lasso. New Yorker Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) moves to a small town in Alabama to work as a GP, after failing in her quest to become a heart surgeon.

Life is very different in her new surroundings, and she struggles to adapt. It’s not as laugh-out-loud funny as Ted Lasso but has a similar vibe.

13. Northern Exposure – Amazon/Google Play

One from the 90s. Northern Exposure was big in its day but seems to have been forgotten. Newly qualified Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) takes up a position as a GP in the Alaskan town of Cicely.

This rural town has some pretty wacky characters that make for a hilarious show.

14. Welcome to Wrexham – FX

This is a documentary in a similar vein to Ted Lasso. It follows the story of Hollywood legends Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds who bought the Welsh non-league team Wrexham in 2020.

The American pair fall in love with the club and are determined to achieve great things. Spoiler alert – Wrexham were promoted to the Football League in May 2023.

15. All or Nothing – Amazon

A series of sports documentaries that take you behind the scenes of major clubs including Manchester City, Tottenham and Juventus.

These fly-on-the-wall shows have unprecedented access to the training grounds, dressing rooms and offices of some of the biggest sports franchises on the planet.
