10 Shows to Watch If You Want a Series Like Umbrella Academy (But Not Superheroes!)
Just like Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, these series mix mind-bending plots with a heavy dose of the unexpected.
1. Russian Doll (2019 – Present)
In Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne plays Nadia, a woman stuck reliving her 36th birthday party over and over again. Every time she dies – whether it's from a car accident, a fall, you name it – she reappears in the bathroom at her birthday party. She meets Alan, a man who's experiencing the same time loop, but in a totally different context. Together, they try to figure out why they're stuck and how to break the cycle.
2. Orphan Black (2013 – 2017)
Sarah Manning, a con artist, witnesses the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Seeing an opportunity, she assumes the woman's identity, only to find out that they're clones. And they're not the only ones – there's a whole sisterhood out there. Sarah and her clone-sisters fight against a corporation that wants to control them, discovering more about their origin along the way. Actress Tatiana Maslany plays multiple roles with such finesse that you'll forget it's the same person.
3. Travelers (2016 – 2018)
In Travelers, agents from the future possess the bodies of people in the present, seconds before their recorded time of death. These agents work in teams and have missions aimed at preventing the grim future from which they came. It's a tad complicated balancing this secret task with living the everyday lives of the people they've jumped into. Imagine suddenly waking up as someone's husband, parent, or best friend without any prep time, all while trying to save the world.
4. Counterpart (2017 – 2019)
J.K. Simmons stars as Howard Silk, a low-level employee at a mysterious agency. Howard learns that the agency is hiding a big secret: a parallel dimension that split from ours 30 years ago. There's a "counterpart" of him in that other dimension, and unlike Howard, he's a high-ranking agent. When an assassin crosses over, the two Howards must work together to stop a deadly plot.
5. Sense8 (2015 – 2018)
Eight strangers from around the world find themselves mentally and emotionally connected. They can see and talk to each other, share skills, and even feel each other's emotions. They're being hunted by a secret organization that sees them as a threat to the world's order. The "sensates" have to dodge capture while also learning to harness their new abilities.
6. Stranger Things (2016 – Present)
In the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, a young boy named Will Byers goes missing under mysterious circumstances. A group of his friends – Mike, Dustin, and Lucas – set out to find him. During their search, they stumble upon a girl with a shaved head named Eleven, who has escaped from a government lab. Cue monsters from parallel dimensions, Russian spies, and kids riding bikes armed with slingshots. Eleven has psychokinetic abilities and helps the gang face off against the terrifying Demogorgon.
7. Dark (2017 – 2020)
In the German town of Winden, kids start going missing, mirroring events that happened 33 years ago. Jonas, a teenager grappling with his father's suicide, finds himself at the center of it all. He discovers that Winden is caught in a time loop, affecting four interconnected families. The series spans several timelines, dating back to 1888 and even going into a post-apocalyptic future.
8. The Magicians (2015 – 2020)
Quentin Coldwater, a fan of a Narnia-esque book series, discovers that the magical world from his beloved books is real. He gets into Brakebills University to study magic but quickly realizes that the magical world isn't as glamorous as it seems. With his friends Eliot, Margo, and Alice, Quentin faces threats from the magical realm of Fillory. The series is like Harry Potter meets Gossip Girl, complete with life-or-death magical duels, and plenty of snark.
9. The OA (2016 – 2019)
Prairie Johnson, a blind woman who has been missing for seven years, reappears with her sight restored. She now refers to herself as The OA and recruits five people to help her rescue other captives she left behind. Prairie tells them she was subjected to near-death experiments by her captor, and as a result, has discovered the existence of multiple dimensions. The group performs "movements" taught by Prairie, aimed at opening a portal to another dimension.
10. Lost (2004 – 2010)
An airplane crashes on a seemingly deserted island, leaving the survivors to fend for themselves. What initially appears to be a survival tale quickly takes a turn for the bizarre. There's a mysterious hatch buried underground, a group of "Others" who inhabit the island, and eerie occurrences that can't be easily explained. Jack, a doctor, becomes the reluctant leader of the survivors. As they explore the island, they find remnants of past civilizations, including a shipwreck and a fully-stocked underground lab.
